All ERCPs performed at an academic teaching hospital between January 2007 and December 2008 were reviewed. Procedure timeliness (time between admission and ERCP) and demand were analyzed to assess resource utilization.

Data were recorded for 393 ERCPs. Profiling identified an unequal distribution of waiting times from admission to procedure due to restricted ERCP availability. Use of resource leveling methodology demonstrated that a small increase in procedure availability (one additional half day per week) would significantly reduce the hospital stay of ERCP patients.

Resource leveling can be applied to balance procedure provision with demand to cope with fluctuations in demand. The impact of resource leveling can be truly measured only by implementing these changes and prospectively studying the effect.

Of 421 primary prevention patients undergoing ICD implantation, 79 (19%) had received appropriate ICD therapies. By univariate comparison, nonsustained ventricular tachycardia (NSVT), male sex, left ventricle diastolic diameter (LVDD), and hypertension were all significant predictors for ICD therapy over a mean follow-up time of 751 +/- 493 days (P <= 0.05). The use of beta-blockers was found to be a negative predictor. In the ischemic cardiomyopathy (ICM) population, 55 (17%) patients received ICD therapy and this was predicted by Vadimezan mouse NSVT, hypertension, LVDD, and left atrial diameter. beta-blockers were protective. In both experiments, spontaneous motor activity tests during 60-min intervals were performed at the end (Fridays) of weeks 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, and 10, where the week on which the first injection of MPTP was the first week; in the case of weeks 1-4, this was immediately before MPTP/Vehicle injections. It was observed that the introduction of the exercise schedule after the second MPTP injection, but not after the fourth injection, restored motor activity that had been markedly elevated by the end of the tenth week. Subthreshold administration of l-dopa tests was performed after the spontaneous motor activity tests 6, 8 and 10; these indicated significant effects of exercise, MPTP + Exercise(2) group, on Tests 6 and 8, but not Test 10. The physical exercise schedule in that group also showed markedly attenuated loss of dopamine (DA). Restoration of MPTP-induced motor activity deficits and DA loss was a function of the point at which exercise was introduced, in the present case after two administrations of the neurotoxin.

“Fibrillation-controlled lyocell fibers were developed by crosslinking reactions between dialdehyde cellulose (DAC) and multifunctional amines. DAC lyocell fibers were manufactured by partial oxidation with

sodium metaperiodate and were successfully crosslinked with two multifunctional amines by Schiff-base formation. The amorphous regions and the char formations, which were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis, increased with the degree of oxidation. After the crosslinking reactions, an increase in the amorphous regions also appeared, whereas the thermal stability was somewhat improved by the chain crosslinking. These results were in good agreement with viscosity-average degree of polymerization values in that they diminished with oxidation level and increased with and moisture regain value decreased with the oxidation and crosslinking levels, which implied that the swellability of fibers and the water absorbency in characteristic sites decreased with them.
